Wheelchair Basketball comes to Wychbold School

Wheelchair Basketball comes to Wychbold School

The Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association has recently launched its very own School Resource Pack to complement the holding of the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships this July in Birmingham. To celebrate this fact, children at Wychbold First and Nursery School had a special visit from a GB Wheelchair Basketball Player, Darren Greenfield.

Darren has been a member of the GB squad for 2 years and is looking forward to cheering on his fellow team mates at the up and coming World Championships to be held next month. Children listened to how Darren became a basketball player after he had a motorbike accident and lost one of his legs and how Basketball has helped to transform his life.

Dennis Hodgkins, from the English Federation of Disability Sport, also attended and helped children to understand that disabled people, whether they are wheelchair users, visually or hearing impaired or people with learning difficulties can, and do participate in many sports. "It’s important that children become aware of disabled people and how their interests and abilities can be just the same, or better, than their own. Mainstream schools house future sports champions, whether they are Olympians or Paralympians. This resource helps teachers with lesson planning whilst enabling the children to learn positive attitudes about disabled people to ensure a long term legacy."

The whole school will be attending the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in July, which is being held at the NIA. Teacher, Tracey Hodgkins, commented that ‘This is too good an opportunity to miss. With the Olympics and Paralympics heading to England in 2012, children can start getting excited about it now and learning about different sports, different people, and different cultures. We are using the GB Wheelchair Basketball Association’s schools resource pack to help educate our children about disability issues, global issues and use the sport as a basis for some of our art work which we will be displaying at the world championships. We are all very excited"
