Local students inspired by World Championship

Final Year HND Fashion students from City College, Birmingham (Fordrough Campus) have been chosen to design costumes for the Opening Ceremony of the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships being held at the National Indoor Arena this July.

Students have taken inspiration from the event itself, Birmingham’s current architectural skyline and the history of the Dunlop company, to create costumes that will be worn both by the Flag Bearers who will lead the 22 national teams into the Arena at the beginning of the Ceremony on Wednesday 3rd July, and by dancers of dna3d, who will be performing within the Ceremony.

Baljit Dutfield and Wendy Lakin, who lead the HND course said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students, through their designs, to represent their country. It will also give them something unique for their portfolios.”

The Costumes will be revealed as part of the colleges Graduation Fashion Show at the Fordrough Campus on June 23rd 2010.

Chairman of the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, Richard Callicott said, “It’s brilliant to get local students involved with such an International event they bring a fresh new outlook to the opening ceremony and we hope that they have enjoyed using the event as inspiration for their final costume designs that will revealed at the fashion show.”

The students who took part were, Michelle Treasurer, Meshec Clarke, Salma Rehman, Shakira Rehman, Tahira Rehman, Tereza Johnson, Rehana Dadd, Gladys Tangawabayiwa, and Shazia Khan Begum.
