Successful Night for Wheelchair Basketball at British Wheelpower Awards
There was a number of wheelchair basketball winners at this year’s British Wheelpower Awards held last Saturday (28th November) at Stoke Mandeville Stadium as the countries finest wheelchair athletes were honoured.
GB women's and Tameside Owls player Laurie Williams edged out fellow GB team mates Fran Ray and Maddie Thompson to win the Best Female Junior of the Year after some outstanding performances in the Women's European Championships in August 2009. Along with Aces player, Simon Gibbs who won the Best Male newcomer award.
The Force Women’s team won the team award, their award collected by players Ann Wild, Laurie Williams, Sonia Howe and Sarah Grady. Recently retired wheelchair basketball player Ann Wild was honoured for Lifetime Achievement. Ann has represented Britain at five Paralympic Games and retired after Beijing having played wheelchair basketball for 26 years.
