Pools decided for World Championships

The build up for the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships 2010 starts here. The qualification is over and the countries wait to see who they will be drawn against in the Pool stages is over.

The draw took place on Saturday 7th November in the host city of Birmingham at Jury’s Inn, the designated hotel for the championship.  In attendance were IWBF President Maureen Orchard along with a number of other IWBF Executive Council Members, and GBWBA Chairman, Malcolm Tarkenter and the GB men and women’s head coaches Murray Treseder and Garry Peel, respectively.

To ensure that the countries were drawn fairly they were paired with their equivalent counterpart.

The women’s draw saw Gold and Silver medallist of Beijing, USA and Germany drawn together in Pool B, whilst Great Britain come up against familiar opponents in The Netherlands and Australia

In the Men’s pools Great Britain will come up against the USA and European Champions Italy, whilst in Pool B newcomers Algeria will come up against Paralympic Gold and Silver medallist Australia and Canada.

IWBF President, Maureen Orchard said after the draw, “We are hoping that next years World Championships will be a great tournament and that the teams will have an unforgettable time.  Hopefully at the end of the tournament it will see the best teams win."
