Chief Executive Officer
The Chief Executive Officer of GBWBA is Charlie Bethel.
Charlie joined GBWBA in 2002 as the National Manager and was responsible for the set up of the head office and employment of administrative staff.
During his tenure wheelchair basketball has seen the creation of the only junior league in Europe and the Women’s League as well as the hosting of the World Under 23 Championships and successful winning of the bid to host the World Championships in 2010.
He now works closely with UK Sport, Sport England and other partners and supporters to ensure wheelchair basketball has a voice and is at the table to secure additional resources and support where possible. Through the team, under the direction of the Executive Committee Charlie is working toward ensuring that wheelchair basketball creates, underpins and delivers quality opportunities for players at all levels in all corners of the United Kingdom to obtain the best possible performances for teams, clubs and each and every member.
Charlie was educated at Loughborough University; after which he followed a career path into disability sport. His first position was fundraising officer for Disability Sport England and then he progressed to a position for the British Wheelchair Sport Foundation. Whilst with British Wheelchair Sport Foundation he supported the development of the 17 wheelchair sport associations and ran a comprehensive calendar of events from grassroots to elite.
As well as his full time roles, he is also a Trustee for the British Judo Association and former trustee for English Federation of Disability Sport and Wheelpower.
